Heart Collage

February has arrived, and tis the season for hearts.
My latest collage includes layers of paper. Vintage wallpaper layered with music paper, lace, and pattern pieces.

The sheen on this piece is really pretty and doesn't show up well on the pictures. I also like the way lace turns out when brushed with modge podge. It adds a whole new texture to a piece.

Don't forget to start making your Valentine list. It's only a week away. My family is already buzzing with ideas for gifts, or cards. Remember it's a great time to make someone feel special, and the perfect time to spread a little of God's love.

Blessings,
Ele

Simple Candles

Simple white taper and pillar candles are... not simple.

Wrapped in plain brown craft paper, and draped in seam binding, jewels, lace, and flash card punches; simpleness meet elegance.

You had me at brown craft paper. Oh the things you can do with brown craft paper, but I'll let you in on that another day!

These candles would be wonderful as wedding favors, or attach a flash card punch of a birthday girl's age and give it to her!
  •

Craft Tips
  • when using craft paper, fold the raw edges to the underside
  • purchase brown paper at any office store (shipping department)
  • glueing paper directly to the candle is tricky, so overlap paper and glue paper to paper
  • when attaching something heavy use a pearl head pin
  • to crinkle seam binding, put it in the palm of your hand and squish
  • use glue that dries clear when attaching lace (Elmers glue stick works)
  • as you can see in the picture, don't throw away jewels with missing rhinestones....they work!
Do not burn candles with paper adornments attached!

on a personal note...I do not have any items for sale as I have been spending a lot of time with my family. Next year I will be an empty nester and I have been breathing in every moment of my sweet girl. I know I haven't been posting very often and I have halted my sponsors as it's not fair to them, but from now on, I plan to update once a week, so please visit often.
Blessings and many thanks to all of you who stop by,
Ele

Pumpkins, Do They all Have to be Orange?

Crisp and clean looking, white pumpkins are found in my house during the season of Fall.

I really like how miniature white pumpkins look displayed in a vintage flower basket or a glass jar.

A metal black crow is at home in a white birdcage.

Vinyl bats cling to the mirror, and also the front door (as seen in the reflection).

A silver mercury glass pumpkin sits on my mirrored chest.

Pumpkins don't all have to be orange to look fabulous.

Blessings,
Ele

Winners!

We have 4 winners. In addition to the tote bag, I have added some journals to the giveaway!

The winners are:
(via Random Generator)
Michelle, Butterly Whispers, tote bag
Kathy, Sweer Up North Mornings, journal
Stephanie, Angelic Accents, journal
Things I Learn From Bear, journal
Congratulations ladies!

The weather has been gorgeous on the prairie. I have been working in the yard, and spending time in the studio, (cleaning and rearranging). The pheasants are having the time of their life running through my trees, and the Mallard ducks have found many nearby ponds in which to swim. God's beautiful world is glorious.

Have a blessed week!

Spring Ruffles

Too many ruffles? Not this Spring. Ruffles are showing their faces, or layers, everywhere.

March is the month to take away the heavy winter layers of drapes, rugs, and dark slipcovers. It's time to add light textures and colors in creams and whites. The perfect way to do this is with fresh layers of ruffles.

Too many ruffles on the pillow above? I think not!

I could not resisit the vintage ruffles on this pillow by Home Centric.  It will look great on my couch, and it was a great price.

If you prefer a more tailored look, the pillow below is perfect. A single band of ruffles is very classy.

Are you drooling yet?

How about now?
Use a smaller version of this banquet tablecloth on a side table, entry table, or even a dining room table.

Ruffles. Need I say more?

Have a blessed day,
Ele

Bits & Pieces

Sadie at Lollishops is having a Bits & Pieces Challenge. How could I resist when the theme is Valentines, and I get to use bits and pieces? Part of the fun is finding bits and pieces at thrift stores, flea markets, rummage sales, online auctions and stores, and in your own home.

On a regular painter's canvas, I used a few different paint techniques, as well an eiffel tower stamp.  I really like the shimmery silver.

I was in a girly girl mood and chose vibrant colors of fuschia and pink, with an accent of black.  Perfect for a girl's room.

I incorporated glass glitter, flocked paper, rhinestones, a velvet flower,  silver heart, velvet ribbon, and vintage jewelry into this collage.

It's not A Bit of Heaven without sparkle, and I have to tell you, I have hoarded a lot of  admired vintage jewelry through the years. The flower bouquet pin was part of my collection for about 2 years. After I went through a 12 step program realized how beautiful it would look on this collage,  I was glad to give it up. I added it to this flocked heart. It does look fabulous:)

Je t'adore

Je t'aime, I love you, Je t'adore, I adore you, Tu es ma joie de vivre,  You are the joy of my life, Tu es mon mon amour, You are my love, Mon amour pour toi est éternel, My love for you is eternal, Mon amour pour toi est si grand que le Mond, My love for you is as grand as the world...

When talking about Valentines Day, I just couldn't resist sharing a bit of the French love language  with you.

Valentines with crinkled seam binding, vintage jewels, crepe ruffles, and glass glitter,  just might say, "Je t'aime".

Je t'adore, I adore you.

I adore you for being a follower and for your words of encouragement.

White Out

Whites, creams, and ecru combine for white out conditions, and I'm not talking about the kind of white out conditions I'm privy to in the Midwest. The talk is all about decorating with lack of color or hue, and in artsy terms, a surface that REFLECTS EVERY color, thus appears white.

My favorite white basket is filled with an off white china plate, a silver plate, and a distressed thingamajig (thingamajig: item with absolutly no purpose, but adding color or texture). My black pedestal table displays a candlestick, a vintage pottery piece, a children's tea set and a glittered star.

When putting together vignettes of one color, (or in this case, lack of color), choose pieces with texture and variations of the same color. Think of visual texture as the glue that holds it all together. If all the pieces were glossy or matte they would seem to slide away.  The weave of the basket adds visual texture that allows the sleekness of the pottery and silver pieces to (visually) stick together.  The pottery and the thingamajig add another type of glue due to their distressed appearance.  Even the star contrasts and adds texture against a glossy tea service. I like it simply for the pop of sparkle :)

I prefer combining white with its complementary color: black. This works well for me because I have touches of black around my home, like the table where this vignette sits. I added silver pieces because black and white mixed together makes gray (silver).  Easy peasy. Get it? But, remember the best rule when combining items, do you like it?

My friend Mary at Vintage Patina really knows how to use white and creams in her home. The following pictures are from her Christmas post, (I know, I just can't let Christmas go).

Look at those textures!
This is the kind of white out I don't mind!

DIY: The star in the little silver children's teapot is an easy do it yourself project. You can buy chipboard stars already cut out at your local hobby store. Paint the star silver, and glitter away!

Blessings, Ele

Humble Pedestal Plates, or Party Divas?

Pedestal Plates are showing up everywhere. Who can blame them? Humble vintage china plates have a new purpose. They love being the center of attention and their self esteem has reached new heights.

They showed up at my mother's birthday party here adding beauty, elegance, and function to the serving table. The different heights add visual interest.  I swear I heard them say, "na na nana na" to the flat serving platters.

These divas started out as plates acquired at flea markets and rummage sales. New (bargain), and old candle holders were glued to the bottom of the plates.

Mismatched plates, bowls, and candleholders were used.

CRAFT TIP: While visiting blogs the other day, I found that "Organize and Decorate Everything" had a tutorial on this very same project!  Visit her Desert Stand post for a detailed how to.  She made great looking stands with new plates. The all white plates give the grouping a sense of unity, but the use of different plates and candleholders add a wonderful interesting mismatched feel.

Blue sheer bows were added to my mismatched plates to unify them. If the vintage plate designs had fit into one color theme: pastels, brights, blues, reds, etc. this in itself would have provided a unified look. Because I had one bright plate mixed in with the pastels, they needed a common factor, (blue bows).

"O.K. my party diva plates, play nice with the other serving pieces."
"Play nice."

Ahhhhh, the Food

Can you say chocolate?

Mint chocolate, dark chocolate, light cocoa chocolate, white chocolate, pink chocolate, peanut butter and chocolate, coconut and chocolate, butterscotch and chocolate, strawberries in chocolate, shortbread cookies in chocolate, vanilla and oreo cookie sticks dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, rice krispies and chocolate, caramel and chocolate, and candy kiss chocolate lined the table at my mother's birthday party.

The other items that weren't chocolate were pink spritz cookies, cream puffs, white and strawberry cake, and Norwegian celebration cake, (more on this later).

The best thing about all the chocolate is that it is highly caloric all the calories were taken out. Everything was yummy!

Still more food, favors, and decorations to come. On Monday, Part 3!

Have a beautiful weekend,
Ele
